Melba Thomas presented: Kenya Water Mission
In June 2022 Melba went on a mission trip sponsored by St. Helena’s Church. Their
main goal was to visit Huma Girls Secondary School in Kenya. Melba showed photos
of the facility and the girls, focusing on the fact that the 500 girls live in a
rudimentary dorm with no running water. The bathroom “facilities” consist of an
outdoor building with 5 unhygienic squat toilets. Each day a bucket of water is
provided to each student which consists of their total access to water for bathing
and cleaning their clothing. There is an outdoor pavilion where meals are served.
The girls eat on the grounds.
Currently St. Helena’s has provided funds to build an additional dorm to house 200
girls. It will have electricity and running water. Another organization is helping
them build a new solar electric system to power the wells to provide water. In
addition to digging a new well, they have built new water tanks for storage.
The girls who attend the school are privileged to be there and to receive a secondary
school education. Some are able to continue on to college. There are no computers
at the school and they are currently looking for funds to acquire several for the
school.
In addition to discussing the school, Melba explained the typical diet in for the girls
which relies heavily on chicken, greens, rice, unleavened bread called chipati and a
cornmeal patty called ugali.
Melba then provided a slide show of the beautiful animals that she and the other
members of the mission experienced on a side trip to a wildlife preserve.
Meeting adjourned at 4:55 pm
