Newsletter - February 2018
The Sage Society
February
Newsletter
· Welcome to our three
new members! We
look forward to getting to know you. 😊
ü Sandi Atkins
ü Grace Cordial
ü Jen Moneagle
Note:
Grace
will be on the way back from seeing new grandchildren. We will welcome her at
the next meeting.
Jen will not be with us this month.
She will be returning from San Diego. Her brother is Commander of the new Navy
littoral combat ship, the USS Omaha. Jen and her family will attend the
commissioning ceremony on February 3.
She can explain what a “littoral combat ship”
is when we greet her in March. *** Google “USS Omaha” and check out this ship.
It looks very “futuristic!”
· Just
a reminder about “tweaks” to our by-laws that we approved at the Annual Meeting
in January:
ü The
Sage Officers are: Outgoing President, President,
Secretary-Treasurer-Historian, and Member -at-large.
ü Officers
will serve a two-year term.
ü We
voted to limit membership to Twenty-eight (28) members.
· Geni Flowers,
Secretary, will circulate a copy of the directory at the meeting. (If you have had changes from last year,
please let Geni know ASAP.) You will review your information for accuracy
at the meeting and Geni will email an attachment with the updated directory.
· Nimmie Huber, Patsy Deer, and Diane
Gallagher will submit a recommendation for the money
collected from dues in 2019. We will vote to select a recipient.
· Donna Armer
will make a presentation on Mosaics. Donna is a charter member of Sage.
· A
few things to consider—these events are related to or support education and
learning:
ü The
Public Library Foundation of Beaufort County is having a Fashion Show and
Luncheon at Belfair in Bluffton at 11:30 am on March 5,
2018.
CARLISLE and ETCETERA will provide the
fashions for the show. This luncheon is always lovely!
*This
event is a fundraiser to support and enhance all libraries in Beaufort County.
The Foundation provides additional funds (above those provided by the county) to
supplement activities when there is a specific need.
*Tickets are $50. Ask Geni Flowers or Stuart
Heath for more information if interested. It would be fabulous to go as a
group.
ü Mark your calendars for May 8, 2018!
The
Beaufort History Museum Tea will be held in The Carolina Room at Dataw from
1:00-4:00 pm.
Tickets are $50 if you are with a table of ten
and $60 for individual tickets.
The
Theme of the tea this year is: Celebrating
Sweet Tea, Demon Rum, John Barleycorn, Carolina Moonshine, and Other Legendary
Libations.
Note:
Carol
Lauvray, Geni Flowers, and several others in Sage are involved in this event.
Carol is President of BHM and both Carol and
Stuart are on the Tea Committee. They will not be able to attend the May Sage
meeting.
I
have spoken to several of you that plan to attend the Tea. There is no way that
anyone attending can make it back for the meeting.
SOOOOOOOO…..
an idea….
1. I
propose that we cancel our May meeting and postpone our speaker. (Patsy Deer is
the speaker for May and has graciously agreed to postpone. In fact…. “I planned
to go to the Tea.”)
2. It
would be FABULOUS
if
our Sage group could have one or two tables at the tea. This would be a great
time to get to know each other and socialize. What better way than at a tea!
3. We
can discuss this idea at our meeting.

· One
more thing:
If
you have books by local authors that you would like to donate to a good
cause, I am gathering books to put in a basket to raffle at the Library Foundation Fashion Show and
Luncheon.
Martha
Weeks said that she will donate her books…..thank you! 😊
I
have Murder Rocks the Boat, by Linda Robertson—a founding member of Sage--
and would welcome any of her other books.
The
books can be “gently used”….no problem!
· I
look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, February 13 at 4:00 in the OLLI
Room at USCB.

Members Absent:

Larry Koolkin, Honorary Member
Stuart Heath called the meeting to
order at 4:00 pm.
The minutes of the November 14th
meeting were approved.
As this was our annual meeting, dues
of $25.00, in cash, were collected from each member.
Katherine Brown’s e-mail of resignation
from Sage as Member-at-Large was acknowledged and accepted.
The announcement was made that Donna
Armer will be presenting her paper on mosaics in February. Claudia Cornett and
Martha Weeks will be on stand-by to fill in with presentations as needed.
Several changes to the Sage by-laws
were discussed and amended. They included:
· Eliminating the Vice-President position as it is not
necessary thereby restructuring Sage
officers to reflect: President, Secretary/Treasurer/Historian and
Member-at-large.
· Changing the term of officers from one year to two.
· Clarification of duties for Member-at-Large position which
includes gathering the slate for officer elections due in October to be voted
on in January. Melba Thomas was nominated to replace Katherine Brown in this
position and was voted in unanimously.
There was a discussion regarding
charities to be considered as recipients for Sage dues money. Born to Read, the
charity chosen last year for this year’s contribution, will receive the $425.00
collected this year. It was decided that a subcommittee be formed to discuss
and vet organizations to receive this money going forward. That committee is
comprised of Patsy Deer, Diane Gallagher and Nimmie Huber.
New members, Sandra Atkins, Jennifer
Moneagle and Grace Cordial were voted in unanimously. Stuart will be contacting
these ladies to let them know they were accepted and Geni will contact them via
e-mail to gather their information for inclusion in the Sage membership
directory.
There was a discussion regarding expanding
Sage membership from 21 to 28 members. There was concern expressed about
getting too big and about the 4 year presentation gap being too long. After
more discussion there was a show of hands which indicated that the majority of
the members wanted to keep the membership at 21.
A discussion of member nominations
followed. In keeping with the by-laws, it was concluded that potential members
could be invited to attend two meetings. The suggestion was made that we find
two people for right now (to get membership up to 21) and for all members to
start thinking about anyone who may be interested in joining. Stuart asked that
if any member currently has candidates for consideration, to please send her an
e-mail.
It was decided that we will start a
practice of letting members know via e-mail when other members have withdrawn.
The meeting adjourned to a social
hour with refreshments at 5:00.
The next regular meeting of the Sage
Society will be held on Tuesday, February 13th at 4:00 pm in the OLLI classroom
(room 124 of the USCB Sandstone building.)
