Presentation by Larry Koolkin
Topic: Jacques Le Moyne
Larry’s presentation focused on the influence of the French in the early settlement of the Beaufort area. They established a small colony in the 1500s called Charlesfort on Parris Island prior to the arrival of the Spanish. This colony did not survive.
Jacques Le Moyne was the first trained European artist and cartographer tasked by the French King to document this area through drawings, paintings and maps. He came to this country to create a record of the flora, fauna and indigenous peoples that he found here. Engravings based on his artwork formed the basis for books about travels to Florida (which encompassed South Carolina) produced in Europe. The maps he created were used for many years as the best representation of the greater Florida area.
Other key Frenchmen who came to Beaufort included sea captains, some of whom were Huguenots, and whose names are familiar in the area – Jean Ribaut, Rene Laudoniere and and their French superior, Admiral Coligny. After the Spanish arrived at Fort Caroline in Jacksonville, FL, Pedro Menendez destroyed the Huguenots there, as Charlesfort had already been abandoned. LeMoyne and Laudoniere escaped and returned to Europe.
Larry mentioned several books that include drawings of Jacques LeMoyne including “Painter in a Savage Land” by Miles Harvey and “The New World” by Stefan Lorant.

Dear Sage Society Members,
Many thanks to Sandi Atkins who provided us with a “hands on” program in October with our own handmade felt ornament to take home.
We welcome our newest member to the Class of 2022, Vicki Mix. Congratulations, Vicki. Her contact information is included in the revised roster.
This month’s program, on November 8, is by our “Tech Genius”, Larry Koolkin, entitled, Jacques le Moyne, The First European Artist to Visually Document the New World.
We
will not meet in December and our annual business meeting is January10th. It is
at that meeting where we collect $25.00 in “dues” and then immediately allocate
it. The 2022 minutes reflect that we
made a commitment to support Hopeful Horizons.
“Sandi Atkins and Jen Moneagle
recommended that the 2022 dues go to
Hopeful Horizons to create a children’s
library in the emergency shelter.”
I would like to propose that we support them for at least one more year, but we can discuss this at the November meeting.
We have nominations for new officers which will be voted on at the January 2023 meeting: President: Grace Cordial; Secretary: Sandi Atkins; Member at Large: Jerry Stocks.
Mark these programs on your calendar for 2023:
·
January
10 Annual meeting, election of officers, no program.
· February 14: Diane Gallagher
· March 14: Peggy Pickett
· April 11: Organizing Family Archives: Practical Tips,
by Grace Cordial
· May 9: Alvesta Robertson
It is not too
early to begin thinking of your next program! We will begin planning for Fall
of 2023.
Please remember to let me know if you should want to
invite a guest. We would welcome a few more to our dedicated membership. Our current roster is 19, including one on a
leave of absence.

Sandi Atkins - Fiber Arts, The Magic of Wool
On 10/11/2022, Sandi Atkins presented a brief history
of how it was discovered that wool from the fleece of sheep and other animals
can be made into a fabric call felt when it is moistened, compressed and
agitated. Wool felt has amazing
qualities – it is waterproof, windproof, acts as an insulator, is fire
retardant and mold resistant and wards off wear and tear. Felt was used in prehistoric times to cover
yurts, make armor and other wearable items. In addition to wet felting wool, it
can also be created by stabbing fibers with barbed needles that cause them to
adhere to each other. This was first
done commercially in the 1880s with large felting machines to create
insulation, rug pads and other industrial items. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that felting began
to be done on a small scale and is now used to create beautiful wearable items
using wet and nuno felting and art and craft items using needle felting.
Sandi brought a needle felting
project for the members to make using wool fiber, felting needles and foam
pads. Each member used a cookie cutter
to shape a felt piece that they decorated for a Christmas ornament.

Hopeful Horizons: Sandi Atkins announced that the rug and books

that is complete, the shelter manager would appreciate several volunteers from
our group to organize the books on the shelves.

Carla Marsh has resigned
Jen Moneagle is on leave of absence
The minutes of the May 10, 2022 meeting were approved.
General business discussed:
Barbara thanked the members who offered to do the November program. Larry will
be doing it. Sandi Atkins will do the October meeting on Felting with Wool.
Sandi gave an update regarding the Hopeful Horizons project. There were delays
over the summer but the children’s room should be set up by the end of September.
Melba Thomas presented: Kenya Water Mission
In June 2022 Melba went on a mission trip sponsored by St. Helena’s Church. Their
main goal was to visit Huma Girls Secondary School in Kenya. Melba showed photos
of the facility and the girls, focusing on the fact that the 500 girls live in a
rudimentary dorm with no running water. The bathroom “facilities” consist of an
outdoor building with 5 unhygienic squat toilets. Each day a bucket of water is
provided to each student which consists of their total access to water for bathing
and cleaning their clothing. There is an outdoor pavilion where meals are served.
The girls eat on the grounds.
Currently St. Helena’s has provided funds to build an additional dorm to house 200
girls. It will have electricity and running water. Another organization is helping
them build a new solar electric system to power the wells to provide water. In
addition to digging a new well, they have built new water tanks for storage.
The girls who attend the school are privileged to be there and to receive a secondary
school education. Some are able to continue on to college. There are no computers
at the school and they are currently looking for funds to acquire several for the
school.
In addition to discussing the school, Melba explained the typical diet in for the girls
which relies heavily on chicken, greens, rice, unleavened bread called chipati and a
cornmeal patty called ugali.
Melba then provided a slide show of the beautiful animals that she and the other
members of the mission experienced on a side trip to a wildlife preserve.
