Meeting Minutes - January 11, 2022

SAGE SOCIETY MINUTES

Date: January 11, 2022

Location:  Pat Conroy Literary Center, Beaufort, SC

Members in attendance:

Armer, Donna

Gray, Debbie

Hathaway, Barbara

Heath, Stuart

Lawson, Ruth Ann

Pickett, Peggy

Robertson, Alvesta

Stocks, Jerry

Weeks, Martha

Barbara called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm.  With 9 members present, there is a quorum.

The minutes of the November meeting were approved without correction.

Barbara presented the names of Lex Bomar, recommended by Jerry Stocks, and Bonnie McCardle, recommended by Barbara Hathaway, to be voted on as new members.  The vote to approve their memberships was unanimous. Barbara will contact her nominee, Bonnie and Jerry will contact Lex Bomar to congratulate them. Barbara will distribute an updated roster to include the new members. There are now two new members of the Class of 2022.

There was no presentation as this is the annual meeting.

Annual meeting topics:

1.     Dues of $25 per member were collected.  Sandi will hold the funds until a charity is selected.  Members who were not present will be reminded to bring their donations to the next meeting.  Of the amount collected, $50 will remain in petty cash for new name badges and stamps and the balance will be donated. Stuart will purchase blank name tags and Barbara will print them.

2.     Since Jen and Sandi were unable to attend the meeting, they will recommend a charity at the February 8 meeting.

3.     Stuart Heath proposed an amendment to the Bylaws, Section 2: Prospective New Member, which would allow members to be voted in during the year. The policy of potential members attending two meetings is strongly encouraged but, especially during the Covid outbreak is not required.  This also involves a Bylaw change. Our membership stands at 18 and we could like to be “full” with six new members to bring our membership to 24. Barbara will submit the current and proposed bylaw changes at least twice so that a written ballot may be voted on at the February 8th meeting.  A copy is attached to these minutes.

Meeting adjourned:  4:20 pm

Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at 4 pm.

List of presenters for 2022:

February 8:  Stuart Heath: Along Came Phosphate

March 8:  Donna Armer:  Monet’s Garden

April 12:  Barbara Hathaway: Bookmobiles

Respectfully submitted by Sandi Atkins, Secretary, on January 28, 2022

                       January 2022 Newsletter

Dear Sage Society Members,

Happy New Year! I am thankful we are able to meet in person and thankful for the beautiful space provided for our meetings at the Pat Conroy Literary Center.  Lots has changed since last January!

First of all, we accept with regret the resignation of charter member, Rebecca Davenport, who has resigned for health reasons.

Our January 11th meeting is a business meeting and we have a few items to discuss including choosing a beneficiary of our “dues.”  Please bring $25 in cash so we can collect, vote and then promptly disburse the gift.  Sandi Atkins and Jen Moneagle will serve as the “Dues Selection Committee” and have researched a new idea for our gift.

Secondly, we would be enriched by having a few more new members!  Ideally, we would like to have 21 members. The Bylaws state that names need to be submitted 10 days before voting, so names have been sent for your consideration by the time you receive this newsletter. We will vote on January 11th.

Mission Statement:

The purpose of The Sage Society is to foster ongoing in-depth study of topics using research and communication skills to further the knowledge of its members.

A note from Larry K, our Tech consultant and honorary member:

Also, some good news!  I stopped by to talk with Jonathan today at the Conroy Center - Via a grant, they have just installed a computer (Apple laptop) to their TV, as well as a webcam.  This means that:

a) anyone wanting to bring in a USB stick can either plug it directly into the back of the TV and the use TV remote to control the show (it supports images and video) -- or

b) plug their USB stick into the laptop and control it from the computer.
