The Sage Society
March 2022 Newsletter
Dear Sage Society Members,
We voted to support Hopeful Horizons with our annual dues. Sandi has talked to the Director and they would prefer that we give money or help establish a library or toys for the playroom at the shelter (or all of these). If you would like to make an additional donation, you may give it to Sandi at our March meeting. Sandi and Jen’s report:
Memo to Sage members:
From: Sandi Atkins
As a follow up to our discussion about our gift to Hopeful Horizons this year, I have spoken with Tonya Doctor, Director of Residential Services, and determined the following:
She would be delighted to have us select the books and bring them to the shelter. The age range they typically have is from infant to age 12. Several of you asked if you could donate books that are used. Tonya said they definitely will accept used books if they are in good condition.
Other items are also needed such as toys, games, puzzles and so forth, which can be new or used.
They also will accept art supplies.
With respect to volunteers, there are many opportunities. They prefer to have volunteers complete their training program which they offer 3 times a year. There is one session beginning next week! It is all virtual. Please check out this link for more information: https://www.hopefulhorizons.org/volunteer-opportunities
Barbara Hathaway said she would help select books. I will contact Geni Flowers to see if she is also willing to help.
If anyone else wants to help with that effort, please let Jen Moneagle or me know. We currently have around $450 to spend, and we will take any additional voluntary cash donations at the March meeting.
I propose a goal of May 15 to have the library purchased and installed. If anyone has any books or other items they would like to donate, we can deliver them at the same time. Jen and I are happy to pick up anything you wish to donate. Just give us a call.
Thank you!

Thanks to Stuart for an outstanding presentation, “Along Came Phosphate”. Our exciting March program features Donna Armer, “Monet’s Garden.”
By a unanimous vote we have changed our Bylaws to allow voting in of new members during the year, preferring, but not requiring that they have attended two meetings prior to being nominated.
We will be having our regular program on May 10. The Beaufort History Museum Tea and program have been cancelled. We look forward to hearing from Debbie Gray whose topic is “Forgotten Survivors: Widowed Servicemen’s Wives of World War II.”
Guests/possible new members are welcome but it is helpful if you can let me know ahead so we can space the chairs accordingly.
